New Program: Sharing Your Story With Law Enforcement

Sharing Your Story With Law Enforcement Program Logo

NAMI has announced the official launch of Sharing Your Story with Law Enforcement!

Sharing Your Story with Law Enforcement (SYSLE) is a presentation program that prepares individuals and family members to share their stories of lived experience with mental illness to a law enforcement audience, such as during Crisis Intervention Team (CIT) training, or other events where mental illness and related topics are featured.

SYSLE Presenters provide an opportunity for law enforcement to hear about the experience of someone who was in crisis and may have interacted with law enforcement as a result, but is now living well with mental illness. The powerful and unique stories shared by NAMI presenters help increase officers’ understanding and empathy, improving crisis response in communities.

The program format is simple, user friendly and easy to access. SYSLE consists of a two-part blended training: a self-paced online course that guides participants through the process of writing a presentation, followed by a coaching session where they will practice, get tips, and finalize their presentation.

Manuals and associated materials are available from NAMInet (formerly the Extranet) free of charge.

NAMI Affiliates (NAs) can complete the approval form, after which their NAMI State Organization (NSO) will add the program in NAMI 360 for them. Adding the program for NAMI Affiliates will constitute approval to implement SYSLE by the NSO. Contact your NSO for more information on how to bring this important program to your NAMI Affiliate.

Please see the attached SYSLE Implementation Guide and SYSLE FAQ for more launch details. One potential item to be aware of—the NAMI IT team is working on intermittent issues related to updating program leader information in NAMI 360. If you are unable to see a program leader after they are added, or if you have other questions on this process, please email

We look forward to hearing about your successes with SYSLE!
